One of the biggest misconceptions American citizens have is that, "our system is not perfect, but its the best in the world." If you mean putting people in prison, than yes, you would be right, it is the best in the world. The United States can attest to the following:
- The US has 5% of the worlds population, but 25% of the worlds prison population
- The US has 4x the amount of prisoners of China, who have 4x the number of people
- 1 in 9 black men between 20 and 34 is in prison
- Since 1987, the US prison population has tripled
- There are nearly 10 million Americans either imprisoned, or under "control" of Government law enforcement. Nearly 3% of its total population.
- Since 1994, federal prisoners sent back to prison within three years is up 91%.
- Defendants in federal court plead guilty 91% of the time.
- The US Federal Courts have a 98.6% conviction rate. In some districts, they have a perfect success rate.
- Less than 5% of all appeals are remanded back to Courts. Less than .00001% are overturned.
- Including all the Government enforcement agencies, Courts and defense, the US Criminal Justice System is a $1 Trillion dollar a year industry. The biggest single industry in the country.
You could go on and on about the shocking statistics about the criminal justice system. There are many, many organizations dedicated to reforming this business. You have organizations like Families Against Mandatory Minimums, who's loved ones are sent to prison for a draconian amount of time as first time offenders. You also have private companies like GEO Group and CCA that have one product, prisoners, and one client, the US Government. These private-public partnerships have to cease. Retired US Marshal's who know the system, already have a huge retirement compensation, then "double dip" by setting up these type of companies only to be funded by US Taxpayers. They have huge Government contracts, get access to Government property and hold "detainees" and illegal immigrants for up to 6-7 years without any adjudication.
Of course at the center of it all is Washington DC. Nothing gets done that Congress doesn't want to get done. The Republicans ( "Bloods") and the Democrats ("Crips"), both benefit from this huge industry. They funnel money into the system and return favors through this system. The "War on Drugs" and now the "War on Terror" is a huge business. What these elected officials say, and then do, are two different things. The pendulum has swung too far and too many lives have been destroyed. If you take 9 million people, mostly men, and take them out of the equation as not only a bread winner, but a father, and then add additional burdens onto the mother or parent to a family, it is debilitating to any family. If the average family is 4, then you have 36 million American's directly affected by incarceration, over 10% of its population. There is no industry more destructive to the American family than the US criminal system. If you think all the men in prison are guilty, are bad people and are deserving of having their lives and careers destroyed to benefit a few, you would be mistaken. The problem with getting educated about the process, is that when you are thrown into, its already too late. The US Government and media think the American public are stupid, lazy and cowards. Letting things operate as they are, proves them right.
